How to Use This Calculator
1
Measure Paving Area
Measure length and width of the driveway or area to be paved in feet. For irregular shapes, break into sections and measure each, or estimate average dimensions.
2
Determine Asphalt Thickness
Decide on thickness: 2-3 inches for residential driveways, 3-4 inches for heavy vehicle use. This is the asphalt layer thickness, not including the gravel base below.
3
Calculate Tonnage
Enter area dimensions and thickness. The calculator converts to tons of asphalt needed using standard density (110 lbs per square inch per square foot).
4
Prepare Base and Order
Ensure proper gravel base is installed and compacted (4-6 inches). Contact paving contractors with your tonnage requirements. Asphalt must be installed quickly while hot—have adequate crew ready.
