How far apart should wall studs be spaced?

How many studs do I need for a wall?

Divide wall length by stud spacing (in feet), add 1 for the end stud, plus extras for corners, openings, and blocking. For example, 12-foot wall at 16" OC: (12 ÷ 1.33) + 1 = 10 studs, plus 3-4 extras.

What size lumber should I use for wall studs?

2×4 studs for most interior walls and short exterior walls (under 10 ft). 2×6 for exterior walls (better insulation space, structural for 2 stories). 2×6 also for taller walls (over 10 ft) or load-bearing situations.

What are top plates and bottom plates?

Bottom plate (sole plate) runs along the floor. Top plate consists of two 2× boards running along the top. Double top plate ties wall sections together and distributes roof/floor loads. Plates are same width as studs.

Do I need extra studs at corners and openings?

Yes! Corners need 3-4 studs for proper nailing surface. Door and window openings need king studs (full height), jack studs (under header), cripple studs (above/below opening), and header boards. Add these to basic stud count.
